Fyne Labs commissioned this study to determine whether the Fysion Universal App Studio might benefit from AI-driven capabilities, and if so, how to implement them profitably.

I examined workflows, uncovered pain points and assessed the expectations of users in a focused market segment to identify scope for meaningful innovation in a landscape already populated by high-profile AI providers and fast-evolving user mindsets.

The research drew on findings from two distinct research efforts—an earlier 2024 study during the fast-rising wave of generative AI, and new data from late 2024 into early 2025, when the AI wave is showing no signs of subsiding.

Activities

  • Distilled and analysed Fyne Labs’ user data from 2023-24.

  • Analysed feature expectations (current available features of market leading vendors in No Code and Integrated Development Environments).

  • Conducted 6 remote 45-60 minute one-to-one depth interviews with target users (technical product owners and managers).

  • Created a flowchart to triangulate between user interview insights, the prior user data and market research in order to identify opportunities for testing.

  • Created a medium fidelity prototype to test solution opportunities and AI-feature viability.

  • Tested app and prototype with four users, discovering enthusiasm for the new features and multiple insights for further consideration.

  • Analysed the data by affinity mapping and empathy mapping and generated a user persona.

Outputs

  • Recommended next steps based on the research.

  • Research summarising insights from the ten user sessions, including:

    • 6 Target User Interviewees’ backgrounds and workflows: Roles and Motivation; Behaviour/Currently Doing; Gains/Pains; Attitudes to/use of AI Assistance.

    • A list of apps used by these interviewees.

    • 4 Target User Testers’ feedback on Fysion as-is and a medium fidelity prototype: Attitudes to AI, opinions on specific UX experiences in the prototype, baseline expectations and blockers.

  • A medium fidelity prototype.

  • A list of high-level Design Principles.

  • An external report highlighting the potential for AI to enhance Fysion including specific high-value applications of AI to meet users’ unmet needs.

  • An internal report with the detailed findings behind the external report and additional operational recommendations.

Result

This research surfaced and validated a major unique innovation to support AI development in Fysion for the project’s specific target user. It also identified several potential applications of AI for enhancing this user’s experience during their app-building process.

The following recommendations of the previous report were also progressed:

  • enable experienced coders to innovate more freely.

  • make app development accessible for those with no coding experience.

  • speed up time to market exponentially for both types of app-creator, in the same solution.

This research project resulted in a unique set of baseline features from which to more easily evolve the AI dimensions proposed. The proposed roadmap took a different route to competitors in the space, to

  • Commercialise: ensure value in the near-term for the target user.

  • Futureproof: safeguard roadmap flexibility for addressing different user segments longer term.

  • Generate Competitive Advantage: foster a unique approach to fulfilling Fyne Labs’ vision of a cross-functional collaborative app builder.
